Chapter Forty-One
âMy wolfsbone dagger.â A low voice pervaded her dreams. âMy obsidian-hilted dagger. My hevrÃt. My whetstoneâ¦â
Sillaâs eyes fluttered open to torchlight dancing across the rafters of an unfamiliar room. Her heart took off at a gallop as memories surged back. Trapped. Not safe. Where were the exits?
âPeeling the flesh from Jonasâs faceâ¦â Reyâs voice.
Whipping toward him, Sillaâs pulse eased. She recognized the shield slung on the wall as Vigâs, and recalled it was his room in which she slept. A wall-mounted torch illuminated Reyâs form, crammed into a chair far too small for him.
âYouâre awake,â he said, watching her curiously.
Her eyes met his. âWhat are you doing?â
The manâs lips twitched. âThinking hearthfire thoughts.â
Rey was here. Safe. She was safe. Taking a calming breath, Silla tucked her hand under her cheek. âAm I to understand all your hearthfire thoughts involve blades?â
He blinked slowly, his gaze meandering down to her lips. âHorse was included.â Rey leaned forward and whispered loudly, âThe chicks as well.â
Silla choked on her laugh. Gods above. Was he drunk? âWhat else?â
Rey lifted his flask to his lips. Tilted his head back. Frowned when nothing came out. âEmpty,â he muttered, dropping it to the floor. âSweet rolls,â he said, his dark gaze honed in on her.
âSweet rolls?â
He nodded. âAndâ¦sunshine.â
His gaze was on her lips once more, and Silla felt suddenly very warm. âSunshine,â she repeated.
âChases away the storms.â
Flustered, Silla pushed into a sitting position, wincing at the vicious throb of her temples, her back, her ribsâ¦everything hurt. But Gyda had examined her before sheâd settled into bed, deeming her only bruised. And then, leaving Silla under Gyda and Runnýâs watchful eyes, Rey had returned to the shield-home to deal with Ketill.
âI gather youâre drunk,â she said carefully.
Rey shrugged, a flippant, careless gesture so unlike him. Even through the drink, his eyes held a haunted look. âHad to question Ketill,â Rey mumbled, head knocking against the wall as he stared at the roof. Anders, back on the Road of Bones, flashed in Sillaâs memory. Fingers sliced off. Bones broken. The look in Reyâs eyes as heâd slit the manâs throatâ¦
âYou killed him.â
âHad to know if heâd spread wordâ ââ
âBut killing himâ ââ
His gaze speared right through her. âNo loose ends, Silla. Never.â
âLoose endsâ¦â
âI left one in Kopa. âTis how they know my likeness. I let one live.â
Sillaâs brows drew together, discomfort tightening her stomach.
âThey already want me for murder, Silla. What is the harm in one more?â But there was something in his words, a certainâ¦self-deprecation she didnât like one bit. âChicks are unharmed,â Rey said, the flask clunking to the floor. âRunný fetched them.â
âGood,â said Silla, mind drifting back to the shield-home. Those men, thirsting for her blood. Ketill, his face seared by her galdur. She winced.
âBodies are with Kálf.â
âKálf?â
âHeâsâ¦chieftain around here.â
Silla was growing uncertain. âAndâ¦the shield-home? Do you think it safe?â
A muscle in Reyâs jaw flexed. âOught to have been safe all along. How Ketill discoveredâ ââ
âHarpa,â Silla cut in. âKetill was in Hefâs company when he brought Freydis to her home.
